So, I moved to Costa Rica

I am now a resident of Costa Rica.  Well, I am a here on a visitors visa until it expires in 90 days and then I will be visiting the lovely nation of Nicaragua approximately 1.5 hours, but close enough.  It has been a whirlwind of experiences that I will attempt to sum down to a few short hours of reading for you.

The Flight

We flew out of Fort Wayne because we were bringing two cats and the extra expense of flying out of Fort Wayne was well worth having to listen to two cats sing the heart breaking song of "of the agony and pain" two hours in the car. Yes they were drugged and it might have been fine, but we were not taking any chances.  We also decided to upgrade to first class since we got two free bags up to 70 pounds and the cost difference was close to the same.

So, we arrive at the airport at the ungodly hour of 4 am - credit to my amazing mom who picked us up at 3:30.  We arrived before the Delta people were already at the counter, so we were the first people to be served for our 6 am flight.  One would think that we would have been ready and done in 15 minutes tops with the cats and everything.  Nope.  There were problems with out passports, problems with the cats, problems with our seats, problems with my lack of return ticket, and problems with our luggage. So the 15 minute check in took over an hour.  Then security felt the need to take every item out of Eduardo's bag and scan them all for explosives. Yuppie!! We were most likely a sight to see getting our 4 large bags - one with a broken wheel now, two cats, two personal items

It was great to see how excited Eduardo was to see his home county on the flight in.  He was also super excited to see his sister and nephew who picked us up from the airport.

The Arrival

Needless to say, we were both exhausted from the waking up after a few hours sleep and then spending 10 hours traveling.  The poor cats were at their wits end as well.  Poor freaked out drugged creatures.  So we came to the house to drop them off then went over to Sandra's house (Eduardo's sisters) and had a nice lunch with his two sisters, his niece, her kids, and his mother - the sweetest woman in the world. We were both pretty much done for at that time and Eduardo was feeling pretty rough but there were still things we needed to do.

We visited his fathers Grave.  That was such a sad moment for him, I know.  It was for the entire family.  It hurt my heart to see him there and know what he was facing.  When his father passed away it happened so quick that Eduardo didn't have the chance to see him or be here for the funeral. It was the first time that he has been together with his family at the site.  It was touching to see them all grieving for the loss together.  To witness the rawness of emotions that were still right at the surface was just proof of how good of a man that Eduardo Sr. was and how much he was loved.  I wish I would have gotten to know him better.

After the visit to the grave site, we ended up doing our running.  Had I known that Eduardo was going to mark his new territory with vomit at every stop, I may have insisted otherwise. We had to go to the pet store and get stuff for the cats, Eduardo vomited on the way in. Then he had to go to the bank and exchange money because the pet store didn't take US dollars or credit/debit, then we had to go back to the pet store to get the stuff we needed while he vomited outside - again.  We had talked about running by a store to get some needed items for us, but after the day we decided not to.  Well, somehow we ended up at Walmart, because his sisters are a force of nature and when they decide we are doing something, we are doing it.  It doesn't help that I don't speak the language and had no clue what was happening. We got to Walmart and Eduardo, staying true to form, vomited in the parking lot.  I went through store with two sisters-in-law who don't speak English helping me buy things while Eduardo vomited in the bathroom.  Finally, we had our purchases made and were heading out when, in a last glorious finality, Eduardo vomited once more in the parking lot. That poor man.

We finally got to our new place, had the sisters put everything away and we passed straight out on what I would consider the most uncomfortable beds in the world.

Week 1 - because I've been to busy to blog my days

We have spent the days doing some fun things and some needed things.  We have been down to the central market almost once a day or every other day.  We bought a car, opened a bank account, learned some Spanish, and named a gecko Fernando.  It's been a great week spend with my husband and family and meeting new people - and a gecko.  Turning the lights off on this post and getting ready to tell you all about the Central Market!

Our Little Metal Bunkers

A few years ago, Eduardo and I started to talk about what kind of building we were going to build on our property.  We didn't want a huge house because it was just the two of us.  We wanted something large enough to comfortingly fit our lives. That included the normal house hold rooms plus an office for Eduardo and a studio for me. We were not planning on living the large life, just a simple retirement for Eduardo and someplace I can prosper at my work and run a cute rental business.  Our budget for the whole move and set up is $80,000.  I know this sounds ridiculously low, but keep in mind this is Costa Rica and there is a reason people vacation and move here. Here's your box.... The traditional house in Costa Rica is usually made one of two ways, block or prefab concrete construction.  These type of houses work well with available materials, weather, and earthquake requirements. They are traditionally smaller units with basic design.  While you can get more complex

All That Glitters...

Many of you know that I have made jewelry for about 15 years.  Some years I have made more than others but it's always been a presence in my life. The business name that I adopted  is Chaotic Contessa Designs. Over the years I have become somewhat successful in the trade and quit my full time job in July of 2018 to work exclusively on jewelry design, much to the dismay of my brains ambassador of finance.  Let me take a moment and share with you some of my lovely designs because you are now actually a captive audience. Prepare yourself to be amazed by my super power skills, ninja like hand agility, Miche langelo(esque) power of design and bodybuilder sized pinching muscles in my poor hands. Please note, this display works best if you read the captions following the pictures out load with the proper amount of aw and reverence.   OHHH AHHH OHHH AHHH Well, now we can move on to more about me because we all know that is why you came here, right!

Coronavirus in Costa Rica

Six days after we arrived the country of Costa Rica was shut down to foreign travelers.  We got here at the right time, thank God.  I could not have gotten into the country if we would have waited a week.  Along with the shut down of the country, Costa Rica also put restrictions in place for bars, restaurants, churches, and gatherings.  Like many other countries they have also closed business that were not essential, closed beaches and parks, and limited the number of people in markets and stores.  The country has done amazingly well containing the outbreak here.  To this date we have 780 cases with 480 recovered and only 6 deaths. Those are great numbers and I've very proud of my new home for being so organized and on top of things. I feel very safe here compared to many other countries.    While most of the country is in lock down it's not as sever as the United States.  We can still walk down to the markets and go shopping for groceries with ease.  The streets here are no
